A Simple Reason Most New Behavior Does Not Stick
Getting Ourselves Ready To Face Reality
The Countdown to the Countdown Begins...
Before you Know It, It Shall be a New Year.
People will be Screaming from Every Rooftop about the New Behaviors they will be Pursuing going into 2025.
What I'm about to say is Not Cynicism...
Just Hard Facts from the Data.
Nearly Everyone Will Fail.
Now, I "Hate" Saying that because the Truth is that Most People "Need" Changes in their Lives!
Most people are Capable of Incredible Results!
The New Year’s Norm
But Sadly, they'll Fall Flat.
Most Within the First 2 Weeks.
By the End of January, Nearly Everyone Quits.
But Why?
How do we Avoid That Fate?
When I tell you Why, you'll Probably Wave it Away.
Say, "That can't be it!"
Then, almost Immediately After, you'll Fall Into the Exact Same Trap that I tried to Warn You About.
Again, Not Cynicism.
Just the Overwhelming Trend.
A Part of Human Nature.
So, are you Ready?
The New Behavior Problem We Face
The Reason Most People Fail to Attain Their New Behavior?
They Are Not Able.
I mean, Physically, they are Unable to Do Their New Behavior.
Now, Do Not get my words Twisted...
This is Not Because New Behavior is "Impossible" to Ever Do...
Rather, it is a Problem of Theory Versus Reality.
Most People "Think" they can Do a Behavior.
Then Reality Hits.
They Try to Do the Behavior.
Fail.
Fail.
Fail Again.
Then, because We, as Humans, Despise being Constant Failures...
We Give Up.
Usually Subconsciously.
Our Brains "Focus" on Other Things Where We Are "Not" Failures.
We "Forget" the New Behavior.
Then, we Become a Part of the Statistics.
December Rolls Up, and We Ask What Happened?
Then we say the Fateful Words...
"This" Year Will Be Different.
But Of Course, We Fall Into the Trap Again.
How is this So?
The Brain Challenge We Face
Well, it has to do with how Our Brains Work.
Most of Us, when Designing New Behavior in our Heads lack something...
Experience.
We Haven't "Done" It Before.
Or if We "Have", it has been "So" Long Ago that our Current Conditions are "Completely" Different making the Previous Experience Irrelevant.
But, Our Brains do what they Do Best...
Try to Create a Solution.
However, because of the Lack of Experience, the Brain comes to Faulty Conclusions.
This Does Not Make Your Brain Faulty!
Just Your Current Experiences.
That's Normal.
That's Human.
For Most People, this Means that the Brain Comes Up with a "Plan" of Behavior that "Seems" Feasible in Theory.
But Theory Is Not Reality.
Barriers come up that the Brain Did Not Expect.
Because the Brain had No Experience with the Barrier.
We Fall Flat.
Ouch.
Try Again.
A New, Completely Different, Barrier Drops on Us.
Ouch Again.
Until We Quit... or "Forget".
The Classic New Year’s New Behavior And How It Plays Out In Reality
A Classic Example is Going To The Gym for 1 Hour.
Our Brains Go "Oh, I can do that!".
But what is the Reality?
Did we Pack our Gym Clothes...
And Shoes?
Do We Know The Machinery When We Arrive?
Do we Become Self-Conscious as We Fail to Know the "Basic" Exercises?
What About Waiting for Machines?
What about the 15 - 30 Minute Car Trip "To" and "From" the Gym?
We Discover it is Not "Just" a 1-Hour Workout.
It is "Also" a 30 Minute to 1 Hour Drive.
Plus, 30 Minutes of Waiting for Machines to Complete our 1-Hour Workout.
Plus, Trying to Come Up with a Workout Routine, Often Blindly.
That's a Large Chunk of Research and Information Overload Your Brain Didn't Account For.
Plus, a Fight Against Thoughts of Being Judged.
That is a Gigantic Energy Waster we Frequently Fall Into!
Oh, Speaking of Energy...
Did you Prepare Your Protein?
What about the Meals to Support Your New Exercise?
Then, there's the Problem of Other Activities.
When your Friends say, "Hey, do you want to do this with us?"
Which do you Choose?
Your Friends or Your Health?
Both are Extremely Important.
Understanding The Reality
Now, I'm not going to "Actually" Make You Choose.
I just want You to Understand the Reality.
"Most" New Behaviors are "Significantly" More than We Realize.
The "Theory" is Nowhere Near the Reality for Most People.
Again, that is Not a "You" Thing.
That is a "Human" Thing.
"Can" We Create New Behaviors?
Absolutely!
But, be Wary of the Theory Trap.
Get Yourself To Reality as Quickly as Possible.
That will Give You Your Best Chances of Success.
