Should We Prioritize Fun Or Growth In Our Lives?
Understanding The Core Of The Problem To Live A Better Life
I was just having a conversation with a young man in his 20's.
Eyes Opening to the World.
Trying to Improve his Life.
Seeking Help.
His questions reminded me of myself when I was first starting my Entrepreneurial Journey.
Trying to Find the Path of Least Resistance towards the Goal.
A Better Life.
When you really begin to Enter the World and Many Industries that contribute to Bettering Your Life...
You become Flooded with Information.
It is Hard to Keep Track of it All.
You begin to become Overwhelmed with Options.
Often, you begin to hear Conflicting Information.
Which is Why I wasn't Surprised that he asked a version of this question...
Should I Prioritize Fun or Growth in my Life?
You see people fight for Both.
On the One Side, you hear things like...
You Must Plan for Your Future!
Pay the Price Now So You Can Play Later!
I Wish I Would Have Focused More in my Youth and I'd have a Better Life Today!
Then there is the Other Side where the Tune Sounds Different...
I Wish I Would Have Had More Fun When I Could!
The Future is Bleak, so You Might As Well Enjoy Today!
You Need to Have Fun to Discover Who You Are, and You Haven't Lived Enough Life to Know Who You Are Yet!
Both Sides are Forceful.
Both Believe Themselves Right.
Both Tell You the Other Side is Wrong.
Both Have Good Evidence from their Own Lives Why You Should Listen to Them.
Both Also Seem to Lack Evidence of Why The Other Side is Wrong.
If you Look More Deeply into their Lives...
You begin to Wonder if you would Want what they have.
Often...
The Answer is No.
Where does this Leave Us?
Should We Prioritize Fun Or Growth?
What If We Are Asking The Wrong Question?
Let me Explain...
Fun and Growth are Not Inherently Opposite Concepts.
The Term you would use here is that this is a False Dichotomy.
Two Concepts that are Placed Before Us "As If" They Were Two Ends of an Extreme...
When in Reality, they are Not on a Spectrum Together at All.
Growth and Fun are Not Opposites.
You can Have Growth and Have Fun.
You can Lack Growth and Have Fun.
You can Have Growth and Lack Fun.
You can Lack Growth and Lack Fun.
All of these are Possible because they are Not on the Same Spectrum.
They are Two Seperate Spectrums.
Which allows us to See "Why" we have So Wide of a Variety of Answers that People Will Advise You On.
Most of the Answers You Hear come from People who "Believed" the False Dichotomy.
Either You Have Fun Or You Grow.
Which means they Acted "As If" it Were True.
They either Had Fun and Lacked Growth...
Or They Had Growth and Lacked Fun.
The Usual Result?
They Felt what was Missing, and either "Wished" for the Opposite "Extreme" of the False Dichotomy...
Or tried to Justify the "Extreme" they Chose as the "Right" Option due to what is known as the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
As Humans, We Frequently have Problems Admitting we are Wrong from a Psychological Perspective, and will "Fight Harder" to Prove We Were Acfually "Right"...
Even when Subconsciously We Know We Are Wrong.
So, to Answer this Question...
Should We Priotize Fun Or Growth?
Why Live in a False Dichotomy?
As Humans, Both Fun and Growth are Incredibly Important to our Wellness and Wellbeing.
By Nature, We Seek Both.
So, Why Not Live a Life with Both?
Find out How to Live a Life that "Gives" You Both Growth and Fun Simultaneously.
Sometimes, it is Ok to Focus on Growth More.
Sometimes, it is Ok to Focus on Fun More.
Can we "Optimize" This Mix?
Maybe.
But there is a Point Where Trying to Optimize Steals from the Experience of Living.
Live Life.
Have Fun.
Grow Into Your Potential.
Do Both.
In my own Life, I have found that I am Most Happy when I Pursue those things that Provide Me Both.
Growth and Fun.
What You Define as "Fun" May be Completely Different from Others, and that is Ok.
What Helps You Grow May be Completely Different as Well.
There are many things that We Share as Humans.
Yet we are all also Unique.
Discover Yourself for Yourself.
This becomes the Path to a Better Life.

Now, it is all well and good to say this.
But it can be More Difficult to “Do”.
So, there are some things to Consider.
We Live in Reality.
There are some Boundaries that Exist because of this.
For Instance…
We all only have 24 Hours.
Our Actions can Impact Others, so our Version of “Fun” should take this into Consideration.
We also have our own Physical Limitations, either Received or Self-Imposed.
I’m Never Going to Play in the NBA, and I must Learn to Live my Life around the Physical Limitations of being the Stereotypical Version of a White Guy without Hops.
To make it Easier, we can Create and Use some Psychophysiological Understandings to Help Us get to the Goal of Growth and Fun.
