Two Necessities For Peak Performance That Are Often Misunderstood In The Return-To-Office "Mandates"
Reconciling What Creates Complete Focus And Wellbeing
If you want to attain Peak Performance, there are certain things we must obtain.
One of these is Complete Focus.
However, there is something often Misunderstood about this.
We have seen it within the Return-To-Office "Mandates"...
Of which I have not heard of a Successful "Mandate" Yet.
Though, many Hilarious Leadership Failures.
But that is Not the Topic Today.
What is it we have seen as a Central Aspect of the "Mandate" Debate?
Whether we, as people, work better around people or not.
To Be Around People Or Not?
The Return-To-Office Proponents would say that People Focus Best when they are Around Other People.
The Remote Work Proponents say that being Around Other People is a Distraction that Prevents Focus.
This makes us ask the Question...
Which is Correct when it comes to Peak Performance?
Well, the answer may surprise you...
They Both Are.
But for Extremely Different Reasons.
These different Reasons also Perfectly Explain "Why" The Mandates have Continuously Failed.
See, when we are looking at being around people, or rather "Not" being around people, we are speaking about Two Different Things.
Both of which are Necessary to Understand for Success.
The Return-To-Office Perspective
See, the Return-To-Office Proponents are worried about Loneliness.
They believe, Rightly, that Loneliness is Detrimental to Peak Performance.
We, as Humans, are Interdependent.
We work best "Together".
It is literally built into our DNA.
When we are Lonely, we "Do" Struggle.
Psychologically.
Mentally.
Emotionally.
Spiritually.
Even Physically.
We "Need" to be a part of a Community and Support Network.
In Loneliness, We "Do" Struggle, Horribly.
Loneliness can and does create high levels of Anxiety and Depression.
Which, of course, can also Decrease Our Productivity.
The Remote Work Perspective
But then "Why" are People doing Remote Work "More" Productive in "Every" Study that has been Performed Properly?
It has to do with Solitude.
The ability to get away from All Distractions to get into Deep Focus.
See, For Peak Performance, we "Need" Uninterrupted Focus.
This is a Part of Flow States.
To Drop Into Flow States, we Need Deep Focus.
Whenever an Interruption Strikes, it can Pull Us "Out" of the Flow State.
Every Time we Need to get Into Flow States, it Requires a "Lot" of Energy (Mg-ATP).
So, if we are "Constantly" Pulled Out of Flow, then we are Constantly Wasting Energy (Mg-ATP).
We only have So Much Energy (Mg-ATP) we can create at any given time before Recovery becomes Necessary.
So, without Solitude, we Constantly Lose Energy (Mg-ATP) which can Decimate Our Productivity.
This then brings us to the Underlying Problem...
What We Are Missing Subconsciously
People think, Subconsciously, that Loneliness and Solitude are the Same.
But they are Completely Different.
Which is a Large Part of the Problem with In-Office Work Today.
You can Experience Loneliness among other people.
People do it Every Day at the Office.
They go into an Office, and they are "Around" other people, but have No Real Connections with them.
In this Circumstance, they "Are" Lonely.
But this becomes a Dual-Problem for Most Employees.
Not "Only" are they "Alone" at the Office, but they are Simultaneously Unable to Gain Solitude at the Office.
Most Employees have Little to No Control over their Office Environment.
They are at the mercy of Everyone Around Them.
Then, they are Exhausted and want to get to their "Real" Connections and Friendships Outside of the Office.
However, there is another Aspect to Consider Here from the Leader's Perspective.
Especially in Upper Management and the C-Suite...
What Leaders Are Challenged With Today
Why do they, Seemingly "So" Desperately, Seek the Office?
For Most of Them...
Their "Only" Relationships Exist At Work.
This is the Current Reality of Today's Business World.
Leaders often Work So Many Hours, and Dedicate So Much of their Time and Energy to their Work...
That they Have "No" Other Life.
When They Go Home...
They "Are" In Solitude.
The Only Place they "Feel" Connected to Others is At the Office.
It is Extremely Unhealthy, yet it is the Norm.
It is also Why so many People are Refusing to go Into Positions of Leadership.
They Do Not Want "Work" to become their "Only" Life.
Which is what puts us in the Current Predictament.
The Problem With Returning To The Office
Upper Managers and C-Suite Executives "Crave" Relationships that they "Only" get at the Office.
With this, they have More Control over their Offices, which allows them to get the Solitude They Need More Easily for Peak Performance.
When they Work Remotely, they Feel Loneliness More Deeply which Detracts from their Peak Performance.
Lower Managers and Other Employees "Crave" Relationships that they "Only" get Outside the Office.
With this, they have No Control over their Offices, which Blocks them from Peak Performance.
When they Work In-Office, they Feel Distracted More Frequently.
The Problem here, for Upper Managers and C-Suite Executives, is that there are "Far" More Lower Managers and Employees "In" the Office.
What does this Create?
Faster Burnout Due to Extreme Levels of Dis-Stress.
Dis-Stress can be "Passed" to People via Neurocardiology.
This means that In the Office, Dis-Stress pushes people into Burnout Faster.
There is a Reason that Over 80% of Employees are in Burnout, and the Percentages have been Getting Worse.
Dis-Stress Spreads.
Which Puts Leaders in a Difficult Position.
The Leader’s Choice For The Future
If they Continue with In-Office Work, their Problems become Exponentially Worse.
If they Go to Remote Work, they either Need to Develop New Relationships or Face Loneliness.
As people get Older, they tend to make Fewer New Friends and it becomes Rarer for them to Meet People Outside of the Office.
What does this Mean?
If Leaders want a More Productive Workforce, they should turn to Remote Work.
But, this will also Require them to Adapt to a New Way of Living.
This is the Problem we Currently Find Ourselves In.
This is Why I continue to say We Need a New Business Model.
The Way It Used to be Done No Longer Works.
It is Not Going to get Better.
We Must Design a New Way to Do Business.
The Future Is Now.
