Productivity is something we as a Society seem to be Obsessed with.
Utterly Obsessed.
How do we get More Done?
In Less Time?
With Less Effort?
I Understand "Why" this is something we are Obsessed with.
The World appears to move at Breakneck Speeds Constantly.
We are Worried about getting Drowned Out by the Chaos and Noise that Surrounds Us.
There is a Mania at Maximizing Profits at "All" Costs, including Human Life.
Fear begins to Overtake Us as we begin to Believe that we are Not doing "Enough" to See Results.
So we begin the Mad Dash.
More.
More.
More.
When we Believe We've Done Enough...
We Still Push for More.
Let me Tell You a Secret Though.
Most Leaders and Businesses have Productivity Completely Wrong in Today's World.
Without Question, there is a Formula that Leaders and Businesses are using that they Believe is Working.
It looks like this...
Action = Results = Productivity
So, it becomes Simple in their Eyes...
More Action = More Results = More Productivity
Easy.
So Leaders and Businesses push for More Action.
Doing it by Hand is too Slow, so Let's Automate It.
An 8 Hour Day isn't Enough, so Let's Do 12 Hour Days.
Or Why Not Just Push to 16 Hour Days, In the Office?
You do not need Time for Family or a Life in the outside world, because "We" are your Family and Life...
'Cue Sinister Music'
However, there are Two Simple Truths Missing from this Formula.
These Two Truths are the Reason "Why" Most Leaders and Businesses Consistently Get Productivity Completely Wrong.
What are These Two Truths?
The First Truth that is Missing is the Quality of the Action.
If the Quality of the Actions is Junk...
Increasing the Actions will Only Create a Junk Yard, Faster.
This is a Large Part of the Stupidity we are Seeing around AI Currently.
How does AI Work?
It looks through a Ton of Information, Extremely Quickly, and Parrots Answers from the Most Consistent Answers within its Dataset.
If you look on the Internet...
What is the Most Consistent Stuff You Will Find?
Junk.
Complete and Utter Junk.
People who have been Parroting things they have Heard, most of which are Untrue or Completely Biased.
Personal Opinions that are frequently based on Lies, Anger, and Fear rather than being Informed by Reality.
Material that is Marketed to Sound Better than is True, Produced by Snake Oil Salesmen who are trying to Make a Buck before being Caught.
Propaganda that has been designed to Prey Upon those who are Most Vulnerable to make them feel Inferior, Scared, and Angry to push them to Act in Horrible Ways.
This is the Majority of what AI becomes Trained On because it is the Majority of What Exists, and what has been Created by the "Knowledge Economy".
So, AI Parrots Out Junk Faster than a Human Can.
But in Reality, the AI is "Not" Getting More Results...
AI is just making Junk Yards Faster.
What is worse is that AI then begins to become Trained "On" AI Parroted Answers, which inevitably creates an AI Model Collapse.
This is Not Productivity.
This is Digging a Ditch to an Early Grave.
What is the Second Truth about Productivity?
What is the Outcome of the Results?
The classic Example we see here is Marketing.
I have seen some Extremely High-Quality Content that has been created by Businesses.
Social Media Posts that are Beautiful.
Stories about the Founders and Executives that are Moving.
Podcasts and Videos with Gorgeous Designs and Layouts that make the Speakers look Amazing.
Tik-Tok Posts that Go Viral.
But here's the Real Question that is Being Missed...
What Result Do These Accomplish?
More Likes?
More Follows?
More Views?
More Downloads?
But what do these "Actually" Accomplish?
Nothing.
At the End of the Day, the Result is Nothing.
People "Like" the Posts, but that does Not Make them Buy Anything.
People "Follow" and then Never Look at a Sales Campaign.
People View and Download the First Episode or Two of a Video Series or Podcast, but get Nothing of Value from it and Leave.
What does this Lead to?
Businesses and Leaders Pushing to Get More and More "Results" that are Useless.
Paying More and More to Get "Further Reach" without New Customers.
Hiring More and More People to Do Work that Accomplishes Nothing.
Vanity Metrics at their Worst.
This is one aspect of what Leaders and Businesses are Struggling with Today.
This idea that Action = Results = Productivity is Inherently False.
Low-Quality Actions = Low-Quality Results.
In some cases, it will actually lead to Negative Results.
We see this with Frequently with AI.
This is the Same Problem that has been happening with Burnout.
Then there is the Second Part of this...
Meaningless Results = No Productivity
We see this with Most Marketing.
We see this with Employee and Customer Satisfaction.
Why do "So Many" Businesses Struggle with Revolving Door Customers?
The "Results" they are Tracking are Meaningless to their Customers.
This is also Why "Profit" is often a "Bad" Measure of a Business's Health.
Coca-Cola is a Great Example of this that I've Talked about in the Past.
Are they Extremely Profitable?
Absolutely, No Question.
But are they in a "Healthy" Business Position?
No.
People are becoming More Health Conscious and the "Soda Drink" category has been becoming Irrelevant for Years.
Coca-Cola is Losing Customers who are becoming more In Tune with their Health, and they are Failing to get a Grasp of the Younger Audience.
Their "Coca-Cola Spiced" Product that Completely Failed is Proof that they are Not Measuring Anything of Relevance to the Younger Generation.
The Metric they specifically used was Freestyle Drink Selections, and I would assume some SEO Search or Focus Group Test Metric around the word "Spiced".
Both Completely Miss What Concerns the Younger Generation.
If you want to Understand Productivity, you need a Different Formula.
More Junk Creates Junk Yards.
Meaningless Results are Meaningless.
What is it that Leaders Need to begin Looking for?
Quality Actions + Results in a Meaningfully Impactful Direction = True Productivity
