Where Flow Psychology Has Gone Wrong With The Challenge/Skill Ratio
The Missing Piece To Finding More Flow States
If Your Goal is to Reach your Potential, there is One Psychophysiological State that You Absolutely Need.
Flow States.
This is where we Feel Our Best.
We Perform Our Best.
We Solve Problems More Quickly.
We Become More Insightful and New Ideas are Created More Easily.
We Find Connections that Elude Others.
We Are Able to Attain Our Productivity Potential, which is Twenty Times Higher than Someone in Burnout based on the Research.
Essentially, if we want to Hit Our Potential, then Flow States are where it happens.
Now, some Remarkable Flow Researchers have come up with ways to help us Find Flow and Activate it More Frequently.
People I have Trained Under as a Performance Neuroscience Certified Coach and Trainer, aka Flow Coach, aka one of too many Certifications I hold.
One of the ways to Unleash Flow States has been called...
The Challenge/Skill Ratio.
It has been written out a few different ways over the years.
Challenge Skill Ratio.
Challenge-Skill Ratio.
Challenge-To-Skill Ratio.
They are all the Same Thing.
This is what the Ratio States...
If we are Seeking to Get Into a Flow State...
Then the Challenge we are Pursuing...
Must Be 4% Greater than Our Current Skills.
You can think of this like Working Out.
If you want to Improve Your Strength, then you must add a "Little" Bit More Weight.
If you Keep the Same Weight, You'll Maintain but Will Not Get Stronger.
Flow States "Only" Exist in that "Stronger" or "Growth" Area.
So, as the Flow Researchers have said, the Challenge must be 4% Greater than Your Current Skills to "Initiate" the Flow State.
Now, as a Way to Simply the Topic of Flow States, it is a Great Tool and Equation.
It helps us Avoid the Challenge of Going "Way" Too Much, which is what Most People Attempt to Do.
If we go back to the Working Out Example, most people are working out with 50 lbs. of Weight, and then think they have to Jump to 150 lbs. to get Gains.
Wrong.
That is just a way to Break Yourself, both while Working Out and while Attempting to Get Into Flow States.
So, the Challenge/Skill Ratio is Fantastic to get us into a Better Mindset around Flow.
However, it Does Present a Problem when we Move Away from "Theory" and Into Practice and Reality.
What is that Problem?
Let me ask you a Different Question...
What is Your Current Skill in whatever You're Trying to Get Into Flow With?
Further, what does "4%" Actually Look Like?
Running is a Great Example Here.
If you are currently Running a 30 Minute Mile, then a 4% Increase might be a 25 Minute Mile.
If you are currently Running a 5 Minute Mile, then a 4% Increase might be 4:55 Minute Mile.
What makes up "4%" can Dramatically Change depending on "Where" you are with the Skill You're Seeking to Attain Flow With.
But it gets Even "More" Challenging when we take into Account Two Other Important Aspects of Reality...
Total Stressors and our Stress Threshold.
Now, our Stress Threshold is how much Total Stressors we can Handle before we begin to Crash into Dis-Stress.
All Stress Adds.
So, if you are "In" Dis-Stress, and you "Add" to your Total Stressors, you only get into "Worse" Dis-Stress.
If you are in Boredom or even Eu-Stress, but then "Add" Too Many Stressors, you just begin to Hit Dis-Stress.
As Humans, our Stressors Change from Day to Day.
Some Days are Relatively Wonderful, and We Feel Capable.
Other Days Begin and End Horribly.
Plus, our Stress Threshold can Also Increase or Decrease depending on Different Factors, such as Resilience Training or Time in Burnout.
But what does this have to do with the Challenge/Skill Ratio?
Our "Skill" will Change from Day to Day Depending on Our Stressors and Stress Threshold.
So One Day, our Total Stressors May be Low, and We've Developed Our Stress Threshold, which means that we can "Handle" More Stressors...
Therefore our "Skill" will be Higher that Day, and will Require a "Higher" Challenge to Initiate a Flow State.
Alternatively, if we are in Extreme Dis-Stress, and we have been in Burnout which Decreases our Stress Threshold...
We actually become "Blocked" From Flow States Completely.
Our Bodies Cannot Handle "Any" More Stressors, so "Any" Challenge will Blow Past the "4%" Mark.
This is where Flow Psychology has Gone Wrong.
The "Skill" of the Challenge/Skill Ratio exists on its own Moving Spectrum.
What 4% "Means" can Change Dramatically and Quickly.
In our Lives, there are Often Subconscious and Unseen Stressors that can Quickly and Harshly Impact Us.
What the Challenge/Skill Ratio is Missing...
Is Reality.
It's a Fantastic Tool for "Understanding" the Concept.
But it is Significantly "More" Difficult to Use in our Real Life.
