Where Tracking Metrics Usually Goes Wrong
Why Some Thrive With Metrics And Others Crash
You've probably Heard it Before in One Industry or Another...
You Need Metrics.
Whether it is in Business, where you Track things like Cash, Email Open Rates, or Net Promoter Scores...
Or perhaps Fitness and Health, where you Track Calories, Weight, or HRV...
Just about Every Industry says the Same Thing.
You Need Metrics.
How else can you See How Far You've Come?
Or if You're On the Right Track?
There is Good Evidence to Support the Need for Metrics as Well.
We, as Humans, have a Tendency to "Forget" Aspects of our Journey.
Milestones become Less Relevant after We've Passed Them.
In Studies around Overcoming Trauma through Nervous System Work, many people Quite Literally Forget "How" Impacted they were by their Traumas.
In some cases, they would Rate their Subjective Units of Distress (SUDs) as a 10/10 Dis-Stress...
Dis-Stress they have had for Years...
In some cases, Diagnosed Professionally as PTSD...
Then after they work their SUDs down to 1/10...
Within a Week would Claim that their Stressor Had "Never" Been that Bad...
That it would have "Always" been perhaps a 4/10 or Lower...
Despite having Experienced it as a 10/10 for Years!
That is How Quickly our Brains can Rewrite the Past, and a Part of Why Metrics become So Important.
But, for some People, Metrics Appear to have a Negative Impact.
When they begin Tracking...
Their Results get Worse.
Instead of Finding Progress...
They get Slammed with Regression.
Even when they are Doing the "Right" Things to Improve those Metrics!
So, what is Happening?
How could it be that Metrics are Needed for Identifying Progress, Yet Metrics can be the Source for Regression?
In my Experience, it usually Comes Down to One Thing...
Emotional Attachment to the Metrics.
People who Thrive with Metrics tend to See It as Data.
Nothing More.
Neither Good Nor Bad.
Just Data.
When the Metrics begin to Trend Negatively, it is Not Bad.
When the Metrics begin to Trend Positively, it is Not Good.
It Simply Is.
On the Other Hand, those who Struggle with Metrics are the Opposite.
They Allow the Metrics to Define Them.
When the Metrics Move Negatively, they Believe "They" are Bad.
When the Metrics Move Positively, they Believe "They" are Good.
I can give you a Great Example with HRV.
Now, when you Track HRV, you should first Understand that it will Naturally Go Up and Down.
Some Days will be High.
Other Days will be Low.
If you are using the Measure Correctly, it helps you Determine your Overall Stressors.
When Stressors are Low, then your HRV will be Higher, and this Indicates that You Can Push Harder that Day.
When Stressors are High, then your HRV will be Lower, and this Indicates that You Should Take It Easier that Day.
If You have a Lot of High Days, then You Probably Are Not Pushing Your Body Enough.
If You have a Lot of Low Days, then You Probably are Pushing Too Much and Need to Give Your Body a Break.
Used Correctly, it can be a Great Tool to Introduce New Challenges (Learning a New Skill, Working Out, etc.) to Figure Out When to Progress Further, or If You're Pushing Too Much and Need Allow Your Body More Time to Adjust to the New Challenge.
But that is Only if You Use It Correctly...
I was once working with someone who was Too Emotionally Attached to their HRV Score.
When it was High, they Thought "They" Were Great.
When it was Low, they Thought "They" Were Horrible.
So, what would Happen?
They would Do Something Great...
But get a Low HRV Score the Next Day (as Should Happen)...
But then "Believe" that "They" Were a Failure and that they Couldn't Do That Thing Right.
As you can Imagine, this can Cause All Sorts of Downstream Impacts.
Just having that Belief becomes a Tremendous Stressor.
That Stressor can then Negatively Impact Future Attempts to Do the Desired Challenge.
I see this with Early Entrepreneurs as well.
Especially when it comes to Metrics like Followers or Subscribers.
They will have a Bit of an Increase in their Numbers...
Then a "Tiny" Decrease...
Followed by Mass Panic that "They" Must be Doing Something Wrong because they Lost a Few Followers or Subscribers!
Then, they begin to Create "All New" Plans because of the "Obvious" Failure that their First Plan Must Have Been...
When in Reality, it is Normal for All Metrics to have Periods of Rising and Falling.
If you Believe "Downward" Means "I'm Bad"...
Then I can Promise You that You're Going to have a Miserable Time and come to some Bonkers Conclusions about Yourself that are False.
What we must Learn to Understand is that the Metrics Do Not "Define" Us.
They are Simply Data, Designed to Help Us See a Larger Picture.
A Picture that we are Designing...
Like an Artist Painting on a Canvas.
Will Every Brush Stroke be Perfect?
Obviously Not.
Yet, that Does "Not" make You a Bad Artist.
You can Still be Designing a Perfect Masterpiece.
Do Not Allow Yourself to become Emotionally Attached to the Data.
Those Who Seek Sageship Also Cultivate Others!
