You Have More In You Than You Realize
My Run Today And What It Reveals About Our Potential As Humans
There is a Truth that most of us do not realize...
As Humans, we have the Ability to Go Further than we Realize.
There is More within You than You Know.
How Do I Know?
I See It.
In the Lives of Others.
Also, in my own Life.
Let me tell you about my Run Today.
The Situation
My Body has been Feeling Really Off the Past Few Days.
I also have a Commitment to Run a Minimum of 1 Mile Every Day, but I've been doing 2 Miles Very Consistently.
I've been doing this for 233 Days in a Row.
I also have a Garmin Device which has Challenges you can go for.
I usually pick up the Running Challenges and see what I can do.
Over this Weekend, they had a 10k Challenge.
10k is equal to 6.2 Mi, or about 3x what I've been Consistently Doing.
Now, I completely Forgot about the Challenge Until about 2 Hours Ago.
I also Knew I Needed to Write this Article and Eat...
All before Midnight.
Talk about a "Bit" of a Time Crunch.
My Estimation
I was Estimating that if I Ran, it would likely take 1 Hour (10 Minute Miles, Consistently).
I also Knew some other Factors were Working Against Me...
I haven't been Feeling Great Physically, which could be a Factor for Slowing Me Down.
I also Knew that it was Below Freezing Outside here in Texas.
When you Combine these Factors, it is a Good Recipe for a Really Slow Run.
I was Thinking that there was a Good Chance I would be Averaging 12 Minute Miles.
However, I already told myself I would Do It.
So, I Committed.
One thing that I've Learned Over Time is that when We Commit to Hard Things and Push Ourselves to Do Them, We Typically Grow as Humans.
Lean into the Commitments.
Lean into the Challenges.
So I Did.
The Run
I began my Run, and things Felt Fairly Good.
Not Great, but Good.
Wearing my "Change The World" Sweats.
Bundled in a T-Shirt, Hoodie, and Jean Jacket.
Hood Up over my Hat.
Hoodie Sleeves over my Hands to Conserve Heat.
Socks and Shoes Today (those who Follow Me Regularly know I often Run Barefoot, but I'd like to Keep My Toes and Avoid Frostbite).
I took off.
The Moment Of Choice
Then, right when I was about to hit Mile 2...
I thought my nose was a bit runny.
It Made sense, it was Below Freezing Outside.
I took my Sleeve to Clean Up my Nose.
Then I looked at my Sleeve...
Red...
I did Not have a Runny Nose...
I had a Bloody Nose.
I was Coming Up to My Mile Mark (I run a Loop that is Just Over a Mile).
I had an Option Here...
Pull off, and Give Up on my 10k to take Care of My Nose.
Get Back Into the Warm House.
Get to Dinner and Focus on Eating and Writing.
I "Had" Hit My Minimum, but I would lose the Garmin Badge...
Or...
Push Through...
Hold My Head a Bit Higher.
Stop Breathing Only through my Nose (a Training Technique I use for Improving My Breathing and Oxygen Use).
Transition to a Nose Breathe In, Mouth Breathe Out.
Get to the Finish Line.
What Did I Do?
I Leaned into the Commitment.
I Leaned into the Challenge.
Keep Going
Was it Ideal?
No.
But I Went Forth.
I Mostly kept the Bloody Nose Contained.
Mile 3.
Mile 4.
Mile 5.
Mile 6.
Then Finish the Loop.
Total 6.56 Miles (A Bit Over a 10k).
I hit the Stop Button on my Garmin...
A Notification Came Through...
The Result
New 10k Record.
I Averaged 8:52 Miles.
They were also Fairly Consistent Miles.
Every Mile was between 8:49 and 9:03...
With my Last Mile being My Fastest (Usually people get Consistently Slower).
All in Conditions that could be Described as "Less than Ideal".
Your Reality As A Human
Now, this may be what happened to "Me" Today, but this is something that can be Accomplished by "Anyone".
I am Not Some Genetic Freak of Running.
I may be a Semi-Professional Athlete...

But...
This is "Only" True because I am More Consistent than Most People.
There is Deep Power that Exists within us as Humans when we Combine Consistency with the Desire to Lean into Challenges.
We Do Not Need Perfect Conditions.
We Do Not Need An Ideal Body.
As Humans, We are Capable of So Much More than We Realize.
"You" are Capable of "So Much More" than You Realize.
We Unlock Our Potential Through Consistency and Challenges.
Lean In.
